Transparent (Amazon)

Watch My Episode

Transparent, inspired by Joey Soloway’s life, was a groundbreaking show for the queer community in front of and behind the camera.

Watch My Episode

I joined Transparent in it’s 4th season, assisting Sunny Hodge. The schedule got very crunched, but I was able to keep up with my assisting tasks while also cutting the dailies on 409, which earned me my first scripted television editing credit.

It was such an honor to work on Transparent, with so many ridiculously talented people, where my queerness and gender queerness was an asset not a complication.

It was not an easy show to put together. The approach was sometimes akin to a reality show in terms of how much improv and varied coverage and continuity might occur, but there was some of the shiniest gold in those dailies that was well worth the elbow grease.

It was also one of the most satisfying collaborative workplaces. I credit Transparent with making me a much more open, collaborative editor. Some editors prefer to hole up in their bays, which is often necessary and I certainly spend a good portion of my day alone working on cuts, but I also enjoy getting feedback and having conversations, truly sharing a whole season with my coworkers as we’re all creating the show together. The best idea will always win in my book and you never know where the best idea will come from.
